Legal & Regulatory Frameworks Weekly AI News
December 15 - December 23, 2025This weekly update covers major changes in how governments are making rules for artificial intelligence, especially a new type of AI called agentic AI that can work without a person telling it what to do every step of the way.
The biggest news came when the United States government announced a new plan on December 11, 2025. President Trump signed an order that wants to create one set of AI rules for the whole country instead of having different rules in each state. The government says that too many different state rules make it hard for companies to build and use AI tools. The plan includes creating a special team called the AI Litigation Task Force that will challenge state laws the government thinks are too strict.
Meanwhile, companies and government agencies are struggling with how to control agentic AI systems safely. These AI agents make decisions on their own and can do complicated tasks without someone watching them every second. The problem is that nobody has agreed on the best way to make sure these AI agents don't make mistakes or break the law. Experts say we need new permission systems and ways to track what these AI agents do.
In Europe, the situation is different. The European Union created strict rules for AI called the EU AI Act. These rules are starting to be put into place, but the European government is already making changes to make them easier to follow. This is happening because companies said the rules were too hard to obey.
The United States Food and Drug Administration also announced it is using agentic AI to help check medicines and products. However, experts are worried because they do not know exactly how these AI systems will be tested to make sure they work correctly.
The main challenge for 2026 is that nobody agrees on the best way to control and use agentic AI. The United States wants fewer rules to help innovation, while Europe wants strict rules to protect people. Meanwhile, companies need to figure out how to use these powerful AI agents safely while following all the different laws around the world.
