Education & Learning Weekly AI News
December 15 - December 23, 2025Schools across the world are starting to use agentic AI—a new type of artificial intelligence that can think and make decisions on its own—to help students learn better. Universities in the United States, like the University of South Florida (USF), are trying out agentic AI to make it easier for students to use technology and learn. At the same time, schools are worried about teaching both teachers and students how to use AI properly. A new journal called AI-Enhanced Learning started this year to help educators understand how to use artificial intelligence in classrooms in smart ways.
In 2025, more districts in the United States trained teachers to use AI, with the number jumping from 24% to 48% of districts. However, only 40% of districts had rules about using AI by spring 2025. Big technology companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are giving free or discounted AI tools to colleges and universities to help students learn. Experts say that AI should help students struggle productively—meaning they should still work hard and think deeply—rather than doing all the work for them.
Researchers at universities like Newcastle are exploring how AI agents can work together with humans to make learning better and easier. The challenge now is making sure AI is used fairly and safely in schools, with proper oversight and training for teachers who use it.
